General Summary
- The Office RN assists the physician or mid-level provider by providing assessments, treatment, testing, and education for the patients of the practice. Must be well organized, have a high level of professionalism, excellent customer service skills, be detail-oriented, able to multitask efficiently, a critical thinker, and able to perform in a fast-paced work environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling and movement, critical lab notification, etc. to ensure that patient care is provided in an optimally safe environment. Maintains and cares for central line and prevents surgical site infections per policy.
- Administers medications (oral, IM, SC, topical, and IV) as ordered.
- Assists the provider with procedures, setting up instruments and supplies.
- Assists with examination as requested within scope of practice.
- Phone triage. Acts as a general liaison between physician/APP and patient. Calls patients with normal/abnormal test results, answers questions and assists physician with return calls.
- Documents chief complaint/visit reason and details according to provider preference.
- Documents patient care in the medical record completely and accurately.
- Initiates, reviews, and updates patient's medication and summary lists according to provider preference.
- Maintains optimum inventory of medications and supplies.
- Maintains venous access devices (ports) and administers IV push medications and flushes as ordered.
- Escorts patients to exam room and obtains patient weight and vital signs accurately.
- Informs and sets up patients and/or guardians for My Chart at the time of service and informs and educates patients regarding the benefits of signing up for the My Chart.
- Performs point of care lab testing and obtains blood samples and other specimens for lab testing as ordered.
- Provides patient teaching and supportive services as directed.
- Provides treatments as ordered.
- Trains RN, LPN, and MA in the clinic role.
- Schedules diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, obtains precertification authorization as required by payers and ordered by the provider.
- Meets commitments, works independently, accepts accountability, handles change, sets personal standards, stays focused under pressure, is a team player, and meets attendance/punctuality requirements.
Education
- Graduate of an accredited RN program required.
Work Experience
- Nursing or other health care experience preferred but not required.
Certification/License
- Current RN license in the state of Missouri or Compact state required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
